House Training a Dog or a Puppy the Right Way
![]()
House training a dog is not that hard, if done right. Crate training puppies is generally more successful, because habits acquired by a dog are often hard to break. However, your process of house training a dog, whether a puppy or an adult dog, will be more successful if you merely follow the advice below:
1. Pick the Crate of the Right Size
When house training a dog, it is very important to pick the right size of the crate, whether you are crate training puppies or adult dogs. The crate should be large enough for a dog to turn around and to lay down stretched without any restrictions. The crate should be at least twice the size of your dog. It’s always better to opt for a larger crate than a smaller one.
2. Do not Feed or Water the Dog too Close to Bedtime
When house training a dog, it is very important not to water or to feed your dog at least 2 hours before going to sleep. The later you feed or water your dog, the sooner you will need to take it outside. When crate training puppies, this can actually save you from having to get up at night.
3. Timing and Special Signs
When crate training puppies, take them outside every 1-2 hours, and if crate training adult dogs - take them out every 4-6 hours. Furthermore, watch for “special signs”, such as the dog sniffing at the floor, walking in circles, and whining. As soon as you notice such signs, immediately carry your dog outside, even if you are off the usual schedule.
House training a dog is generally much more successful, when crate training puppies. It is usually harder to change the habits of an adult dog. However, it can be achieved with patience and perseverance.
